April

April is almost past and it has been a busy month for the crews at Cranleigh, with our two budding new recruits Marrie and Karren now undertaking there on station training, getting them to the high standard ready for there basic course. As a station we are always thinking of ways of improving community safety, many of you may of seen John Uwins walking the beat with PCSO Steve Baldwin this month, this is part of the arson reduction program that we are currently working on, we are also working with our collages at Haslmere and Farnham fire stations and Surrey Police, in RTC reduction program. Both of Cranleigh's pumps attended the Cranleigh Rugby Clubs tournament day promoting safe driving, and road safety advice. All in all it was a busy day but was well worth doing. Crews are attending CAFS refresher training next moth with the view to picking up the new fire appliance at the end of May.

February

Community fire safety continues at a pace, Fire fighter Woodley and Penson have passed there basic training and are now on the run and riding the pump, this has helped with the availability of the fire appliances. We have two new recruits waiting in the wings, Marie Nelson and Karren Tetley have both passed her assessments and is now starting her on station training prior to her basic training course.

The new appliance will be here in the next 4 to 6 weeks, the key hand over is scheduled for the 23rd of March and then there will be a bit of crew training before it comes to its new home here at Cranleigh.

October

We are still awaiting the delivery of the Scania appliance, we have all received the training on the new appliance, and I am sure we all agree it will improve the ability for us to quickly put out fires and protect property. Many of you walking past the fire station will have noticed that Surrey Ambulance Service have moved in this is only temporary whilst Elmbridge is closed, but who knows in the future we may share the building. Otherwise we have had a quiet month with a few flooding calls in the Guildford area and as the nights close in and the weather gets worse, we have attended a few R.T.Cs. Please watch your speed! Dann Pannel has left us to start work on a cruise ship we all wish him well and hopefully I will be able to put a web link to Dann soon. More importantly, now Dann has gone we are in need of new fire fighters, especially day cover, you need to be over 18 years old and live and/or work in the village and able to respond to calls within 4 minutes of the fire station. If this sound like you please email me or pop in on Thursday nights between 7pm and 9.30pm to see what all the fuss is about.
Scania / Cafs Training

Scania Training has begun with driver training to get us all used to the new vehicle, it is a little bit longer and wider than the old one, but is a joy to drive. All of the drivers will have recieved there training this week and the pumping side of the training will commence in September, this is the reason that the openday has had to be canceled.

Cranleigh out on the commons

As the weather is getting hotter and it still hasn't rained the counties commons are getting tinder dry, this means that people have to be a lot more careful when they are out and about on the commons, try and remember the country code especially when it comes to smoking, if you have a cigarette whilst walking, be extra careful when getting rid of matches and fag ends, also it is not advisable to light fires, or BBQ's on the heaths whilst the weather is so hot and the undergrowth is so hot. If you do see a fire on the commons, it helps us if you give accurate directions, so we can make a fast response.

New Work Place Fire Safety Regulations.

If you are an employer please make sure you do not get caught out by the new fire regulations that are soon to be enforced see useful links for some help.

Community Safety Room

Any one who has been into the fire station in the last few weeks will know that we are doing up the old bar area, through the mess room to the kitchen. This is to create a new area that will be used for community safety things, weather it be talks to schools, or other groups about fire and road safety or general training for the crews on station, the work has been carried out by Cranleigh crews, and with a limited budget to work with, we have in listed the help of some other companies, like E.H.D Building Supplies, Cranleigh Tiles, Magnet, Wickes, B & Q, and Homebase Guildford. who have all supplied materials free of charge. The project should be complete in the next 3 weeks, I will post some pictures when we have finished.

Donkey's reached 30 years!

Paul Booker has been working for Surrey Fire Service for 30 years, and the crew have presented him with a set of crystal glasses, to mark this achievement. In this time spent serving the local community Paul has undoubtedly saved many lives.

Rank Markings

When you see us all about now in the local area you may think, core blimee what alot of Subs, Don't worry, your not going mad Surrey fire & Rescue service is following the national rank to role scheme and the old rank of Leading Fire Fighter has been superseded by the role of Crew Manager and the markings are the same as the old Sub Officer rank. Sub Officers are now called Watch Managers and carry the old rank markings of Station Officer.

New Fire Appliance

Keep your eyes open in the next few months as Cranleigh Fire Station is in line to get a new fire appliance. The Scania fire appliance is to be fitted with the new Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS). This will allow a much quicker knock down of a fire, and therefore less stress the the fire fighter and is also better for the environment.

Snow Chains

With the cold weather on the way, we have been issued with snow chains, this will help us get to an incident if the road conditions are very bad. The crews have all had training on fitting them and lets hope we don't have to use them.

Chains spec...

New Alloy cable products available for single and dual heavy duty applications The new "TA" series (TA1900 Series for singles and TA3900 for duals) is a familiar-looking product with a few unique new features. Alloy Radial Chain is available in both single and dual applicatons. SCC's "traction coil" cross members have always been the best performing and most durable cable-style cross members on the road, but Alloy Radial Chain's traction coils are made from manganese alloy steel for even greater durability. "TA" Alloy Radial Chain uses a link-style fastening system with an "over center" outside latch for easier installation and re-adjustment.The cross member eyelets (where the cross member attaches to the side cables) are a new, even stronger design than previous SCC products for trucks and buses, but they still allow for easy replacement of worn cross members without special tools. (SCC does have special tools available to make fleet shop repairs easier.) These cables are legal to use in every state where winter traction products are allowed. Low operating space requirements (around drive tires). Simple mounting and removal, due to its low weight. Improved starting, stopping and cornering performance. Alloy Radial Chain is an excellent, yet affordable choice in winter traction

Christmas Visits
