Fires

 April 2008

In the early hours, Cranleigh fire crews tackled a large blaze at Cranleigh School in a remote class room.

The alarm was raised at about 4am after the blaze ripped through a new timber-built furniture studio and classroom at Cranleigh School. Fire engines and a water carrier from Cranleigh, Dunsfold and Guildford controlled the blaze at the Horseshoe Lane school before it spread to a neighbouring building. The new studio, in the school grounds and under construction, was due to be finished next week.

After a long period with little rainfall and hot weather brings the common fires again, these put a strain on the fire service as the fires are normally in hard to reach areas.

Small fire in kitchen caused by a box being left on the cooker and the occupiers nipping out to the shops to get a take away. When they got back they heard the smoke detector and called us!

2 Pumps Cranleigh, and 1 Pump Dunsfold and Simon Moore as fire investigation officer attended this incident.

Smoke detector that saved a mans life in this house fire, although the detector had not been fitted to the ceiling it still went off as the battery was fitted and working and the detector was sitting on the window ledge. Once the smoke layer reached the detector it activated, waking the occupier who had made a fire plan and escaped using his alternative route as the main stairway was cut off by smoke and fire. The smoke detector shown here was still going off after the fire had been extinguished, and has played a large part in our local smoke alarm campaign.

2 Pumps Cranleigh attended this incident, and officers from Cranleigh and Waverly examined the scene the next day for a cause, That turned out to be a defective flu on a wood burning stove.

In this case the man escaped with his life with a smoke alarm incorrectly installed, you may not be as lucky. Fit them correctly, test them regularly, and make a FIRE PLAN.
